We wrzesniu (12-14) 2004 bylem w Chicago na wystawie techniki przemyslowej IMTS 2004. Przy okazji odwiedzilem stare katy i sfotografowalem pare nowych atrakcji.

On September 12-14, 2004 I attended the industrial manufacturing technology show (IMTS 2004) in Chicago. I used the opportunity to visit old places and to photograph some new attractions in the city.

Korytarz w Lakeside Center, ktore jest czescia McCormick Center, gdzie odbywala sie wystawa. McCormick center jest olbrzymie i pomimo, iz na wystawie byly tysiace ludzi, niektore korytarze swiecily pustkami. Ten korytarz kojarzy mi sie z tajemniczymi i niepokojacymi pomieszczeniami pustego portu lotniczego opisanymi na koncu "Kataru" Lema.

A corridor in the Lakeside Center, which is a part of the McCormick center, where the IMTS 2004 took place. McCormick center is huge and despite the thousands of people attending the show, some sections of the buildings still seemed empty. This corridor reminds me about the empty airport at the end of the Stanislaw Lem's novel "Chain of Chance".
Widok na jezioro Michigan na poludniowy-wschod; zdjecie robione sprzed Lakeside Center.

Looking southeast at the lake Michigan. Taken a few hundred feet from the Lakeside Center building.
Fontanna Buckingham w Grant Park nad brzegiem jeziora Michigan w centrum Chicago.

Buckingham Fountain in Grant Park on the shore of lake Michigan in Chicago Downtown. From time to time the fountain shoots up a jet of water reaching 150 feet.
Ta twarz to czesc fontanny Crown Foutain, zaprojekowanej przez hiszpanskiego rzezbiarza Jaume Plensa. Fontanna miesci sie w nowo wybudowanym Parku Tysiaclecia, niedaleko Art Institute w Chicago. Fontanna sklada sie z dwoch prostopadlosciennych blokow pokazujacych obrazy twarzy (sa to wyswietlacze z diod) 1000 ludzi z Chicago. Dzieci maja radoche (szczegolnie latem), a calosc w ogole jest ciekawa.

This face is a part of the Crown Foutain in the newly built Millenium Park near the Art Institute in Chicago. The fountain was designed by a Spanish sculptor Jaume Plensa. It consists of two towers showing video images of faces of 1000 Chicagoans (large LCD displays). The towers face each other over a shallow (fraction of an inch) pool. From time to time each face purses its lips and a spout of water comes out of the tower (see the next picture). After a while the images disappear and water cascades down both towers. Then the entire sequence is repeated with different faces. The kids have lots of fun (especially in the summer) and the entire installation is very interesting.
To wlasnie druga twarz wypluwajaca wode. Budynek z tle to Art Institute.

This is the other face spouting water. The building in the background is Art Institute of Chicago. The kids have fun under this "waterfall" (later, when the water casades down the tower, it becomes a real waterfall).
Kolejna atrakcja w Parku Tysiaclecia: rzezba brytyjskiego artysty (pochodzi z Indii) Anisha Kapoora.

Another attraction in the Millenium Park: a sculpture oficially by a British sculptor Anish Kapoor. Officially it is called "Cloud Gate" and unofficially "The Bean" due to its bean (or rather flattened kidney) shape. It is made from polished stailess steel and it is really impressive. It looks like a giant drop of mercury. People touch it, photograph it and seem generally stunned. The sculpture is actually located on the roof of the "Park Grill" restaurant in which I photographed the still life featured in the Seattle-Dayton gallery (good food!).
The picture (as well as the following pictures) was taken at dusk.
Moje odbicie w "Cloud Gate".

My reflection in the "Cloud Gate"

"Cloud Gate" and the skyscrapers in downtown Chicago. Here its elongated kidney shape is visible a little better.
W nocy "Cloud Gate" wyglada rownie niesamowicie - jak statek kosmiczny obcych.

At night "Cloud Gate" also looks amazing - like an alien spaceship.
